La Jolla, Mission Bay, Kearny, Lincoln, Henry, Crawford, San Diego and Scripps Ranch test their metal's mettle

Posted on 11:00 by Unknown
Robotics teams from Scripps Ranch High and San Diego High made it to the quarterfinals in the recent FIRST regional robotics event, joining fellow San Diego Unified schools La Jolla, Mission Bay, Kearny, Lincoln, Henry and Crawford in the annual competition.

This year’s game, Ultimate Ascent, is played between two alliances of three teams each. Each alliance competes by trying to score as many flying discs into their goals as possible during the two-minute and 15-second match. Discs scored in higher goals score alliances more points. Matches end with robots attempting to climb up pyramids located near the middle of the field.

Other teams to receive awards included: La Jolla High, Regional Finalists #1; San Diego High, Highest Rookie Seed; and Madison High, Imagery Award in honor of Jack Kamen; and Volunteer of the Year to Cameron Dennis, one of the mentors for Madison’s team. Students from schools throughout San Diego County and southern California were joined by others from Arizona, Nevada and Mexico. More than 1,500 students were scheduled to participate.

Over a six-week time period, students work with professional engineering Mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a Kit of Parts and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.

The students rely heavily on the concepts they are learning in their Project Lead The Way engineering courses. The teams work with adult mentors over a six week period to build, program and test their robots.  San Diego Regional FIRST Robotics Competition sponsors and volunteers come from some of the most highly regarded organizations in the area including Qualcomm, SAIC, Viasat and Teradata. Sponsors provide resources including time and talent from professional mentors, services, equipment, financial contributions and volunteers.

Robotics teams package robots to ring it up

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
Receiving kits. Nine student teams from the San Diego Unified School District will join over fifty other teams at this year’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, Ring It Up. Teams from Madison High, Scripps Ranch High, Mission Bay High, Kearny Complex, San Diego High Complex, Lincoln High, Henry High, Crawford High and High Tech High have been building their robots since the kits were distributed on January 5, 2013.

The students rely heavily on the concepts they are learning in their Project Lead The Way Engineering courses. Each team was supplied with a kit of parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components – with no instructions. The teams work with adult mentors over a six week period to build, program and test their robots. The deadline for packaging their robots for the competition event was midnight February 19, 2013. No more work can be done on any of the robots until the day of the event.

This year’s event will be held at the Valley View Casino Center on Sports Arena Boulevard on March 7-9, 2013.

At the launch event in January 2013, Dean Kamen, FIRST founder, said, “FIRST isn’t about competing, it’s about cooperating, and recognizing that if you have the right tools, you’ll be able to make this world a better place for yourself and for the county. This is not stimulus package that will have as much return as stimulating a bunch of kids to become the workforce of the future, the problem solvers, the creators of the future.”

Madison Robotics a Hit at Lindbergh-Schweitzer

Posted on 11:00 by Unknown

Robotics demonstration. Lindbergh Schweitzer is part of the Madison Community of Schools, and that was evident on at the elementary school's recent Fall Festival when the Madison High School Robotics Team amazed the crowds with its "basketball shooting" robot. The robotics team, the Devil Duckies, were wonderful representatives of their high school and have participated for the last few years in this popular Clairemont family-friendly day for play.

The Robotics Team is connected with the Design and Technology Academy (DATA) at Madison High and supported through the Office of College, Career and Technical Education. The students completely build their robot each year based on the parameters of the FIRST competition over a period of six weeks. Madison’s team is sponsored by Motorola Solutions Foundation and Qualcomm. In last year’s competition, they won the chairman’s award in a Southern California competition. This earned them the privilege of attending the world competition in St. Louis where they won the imagery award.

Building on community involvement and school awareness is one of the major goals of the Madison Community of Schools coalition, and this event is the perfect example of how our cluster schools are working together for the success of all our students and families!
